Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister of Scotland, has revealed plans to exempt care leavers from paying council tax. Ms Sturgeon announced the plan at the SNP conference on Tuesday, which will target people under the age of 26.
Scottish government statistics state that at least 21% of care leavers become homeless within five years. Also the report notes care leavers are three times more likely to be unemployed compared to their peers.
Supported Fostering Services is calling upon the government in England and Wales to follow the example in Scotland to give young people that little extra support when starting independent living. As a foster charity everyone at Supported Fostering Services is committed to supporting young people throughout the time they are placed with SFS. This includes their transition to independence and after they’ve left care, Staying Put or When I’m Ready plans. SFS provide an open door for young people offering free support and advice with practical day to day matters no matter how old they are.
